John Scalzi: Old Man’s War – Vének háborúja [kritika]

A 2005-ös év egyik legnagyobb meglepetése volt John Scalzi Old Man’s War című regénye, amely a military sci-fi legjobb hagyományait követve nyújt elképesztően jó olvasmányélményt. 2006-ban végül Robert Charles Wilson Pörgése kapta meg a legjobb regénynek járó Hugo-díjat: ha akkor szavazhattam volna, akkor ugyancsak vakargatnom kellett volna a fejemet, hogy melyik mű érdemelné meg jobban az elismerést. A hamarosan az Agave gondozásában Vének háborúja címmel megjelenő regény éppúgy méltó lett volna a díjra, mint a megérdemelten győztes Pörgés. Ha a magyar fordítás is rendben lesz, akkor a Vének háborúja lehet az idei év legjobb sci-fi kiadványa a hazai piacon.

John Scalzi rögtön az első regényével felnőtt ahhoz a színvonalhoz, amit Joe Haldeman Örök háborúja és Robert A. Heinlein Csillagközi inváziója húzott meg – ez “bejáratott” szerzőtől is szép teljesítmény lenne. A Starhip Troopers hatása teljesen vitathatatlan, a köszönetnyilvánításban ezt Scalzi egyértelművé is teszi – de van annyi eredetiség, frissesség az írásban, hogy nem válik a sci-fi klasszikus árnyékává. A szerző gondosan, ugyanakkor magabiztosan viszi tovább a heinlein-i örökséget, miközben felépíti a saját környezetét, saját karaktereit, saját történetét.

A Vének háborúja indítása, az első pár bekezdés az egyik legütősebb nyitás, amit sci-fi regényben olvastam – de szerencsére Scalzi a későbbiekben is tudja tartani ezt a minőséget. A felépítés egyébként teljesen a Starship Troopers-re hajaz: megismerjük a főhőst, akinek a szemén keresztül látjuk a világot és a sztorit; a főhős hátrahagyja előző életét, belép a hadseregbe; kiképzik, csatákban vesz részt, majd a regény végén jön egy sorsfordító ütközet.

A regény első harmadában lényegileg semmi nem történik – mármint semmi olyan, amit más sci-fikben nem olvastunk, láttunk volna. Ez a “semmi” viszont elég lebilincselően van megírva, kisebb-nagyobb csavarokkal. Van kötelező kiképző őrmester, aki kötelezően bunkó az újoncokkal – az a tipikus arc, akit már annyi katonás-harcos-lövöldözős akciófilmben láthattunk már. És akiről néhány mondaton belül kiderül, hogy mégis miért nem ugyanaz a sztereotip fazon, mint a többi. Scalzi hajlamos többször is eljátszani ugyanezt a trükköt – mutat valami oltári mértékben közismert sablont, amire csak legyintenénk… de valahogy kifordítja, megfűszerezi valami aprósággal, amitől egyedi és érdekes lesz.

A regénynek már az alapvetése is ilyen. Amióta világ a világ, rengeteg háborús filmet láttunk, vagy hasonló regényt olvastunk, ahol a fiatal kölyök belép a hadseregbe, ahol embert nevelnek belőle, és a végén ő lesz az, aki megmenti a napot (esetleg közben hősiesen el is patkol). Egy-egy háború tragédiáit nehezen lehetne rangsorolni, de az egyik szörnyűségük az, hogy olyan fiatalok esnek el bennük mindkét oldalon, akik előtt még ott áll az élet. Akiket aztán meggyászolnak a szüleik, a feleségük, esetleg egy-egy gyereket is maguk után hagynak.

De mi történne akkor, ha a csillagközi háborúkat ezentúl nem a fiatalok, hanem az öregek vívnák? Olyanok, akik már leéltek egy teljes életet, dolgoztak, családot alapítottak, unokáik vannak… és már megöregedtek? A regény főhőse, John Perry is egy ilyen öregember: egy a sok újonc közül, akik 75 évesen beléptek a hadseregbe, jelen esetben a CDF-be (Colonial Defense Force) kötelékébe.

No persze semmiféle háborút nem lehet felfegyverzett kriptaszökevényekkel megvívni – nem hogy csillagközi háborúkat fejlett idegen lényekkel szemben. Az Old Man’s War Földje nagyjából olyan, mint amilyen a sajátunk. A különböző országok megmaradtak, olykor vannak még háborúk, de alapvetően a régi, jó öreg Földről van szó. A világ leginkább boldog tudatlanságban él, ami a csillagközi eseményeket illeti. Ám majdnem minden nagyobb városban van egy-egy CDF toborzó iroda – amik meglehetősen sikeresen működnek. Hatvan évesen legalábbis elég sokakat elkezd foglalkoztatni a halál gondolata, és bizony ilyenkor csak elolvas, megnéz az ember egy-egy toborzó anyagot… ha az arról szól, hogy egy minimum két, legfeljebb tíz éves katonai szolgálatot bevállalva megfiatalodhat.

Márpedig a CDF ezt ígéri: lépj be, megfiatalítjuk a testedet, cserébe viszont harcolnod kell. Ez persze nem egy életbiztosítás: a CDF nem a Csillagflotta, a galaxis meg nem a Bolygók Egyesült Föderációja. Épp ellenkezőleg: Darwin rémálmaiban sem jelenhetett meg ilyen durva, a túlélésért folytatott harc. A “vének” nem csak megfiatalított, de feljavított testekben élhetnek tovább, gyorsabbak, erősebbek, egészségesebbek, mint bármikor máskor. Nanotechnikával kevert genetikai módosításokat hajtanak végre az újoncokon, hogy állják a sarat. Már-már nem is igazán emberek emiatt – a manapság divatos transzhumán-téma megjelenik a regényben, de nem nyomja el a cselekményt.

Ezek nélkül a módosítások nélkül egyetlen percet sem élnének túl a csatatéren a CDF katonái: az idegen fajok sokaságával, néhány kivételtől eltekintve nem nagyon lehet barátkozni. Agresszívnak, keménynek kell lenni, mivel a kolonizációra alkalmas bolygókból kevés van. Az Old Man’s War univerzumában egész egyszerűen túl sok minden választja el egymástól a fajokat: túl sok a kulturális, civilizációs szakadék ahhoz, hogy reális esélye legyen a békés együttélésnek, ugyanakkor pedig az élhető, vagy bizonyos nyersanyagokban gazdag bolygók hiánycikket képeznek.

Az egyes szám első személyű elbeszélés kitűnően mutatja be ezt a világot, John Perryvel együtt “növünk fel”: mert bizony 75 éves élettapasztalat ide vagy oda, ez bizony egy új élet, új szabályokkal, új világgal, amihez fel kell nőni. Ugyanakkor kell is ez az emberi kapocs: enélkül ugyanis élvezhetetlenül sötétté válna ez az univerzum. A világgal kapcsolatos kérdések, legyenek azok technikaiak, történetiek vagy épp morálisak Perry alakján keresztül kerülnek megválaszolásra. A befelé forduló moralizálgatás nem jellemző, inkább a többi katonával (legyenek azok csapattársak vagy épp parancsnokok) való interakciók folyamán kerülnek kitárgyalásra ezek a kérdések.

Úgy, hogy még a fénysebességnél gyorsabb utazás technikáját taglaló technoblablát is sikerült könnyeden, élvezhetően megírnia Scalzinak, aki nem követi el azt a hibát, hogy túl sok science-t akarna belevinni a fictionbe. Végig tudja, hogy nem “wi-fi“-t (“wikipedia-fiction”-t) ír: az emberi test felturbózása, a csillagközi utazás, az idegenek eltérő technikai színvonala mind-mind lehetőséget adna számos Wikipédia-bejegyzés citálására, hogy ezzel tűnjön intelligensebbnek a regény és a szerző. A fentebb említett transzhumán vonal, a “mennyire tekinthetők egyáltalán embereknek ezek a katonák?”-kérdés megjelenése is csábítana a fejezeteket kitöltő elmélkedésekre. Scalzi azonban nem sétál bele ezekbe a csapdákba, és jól teszi. A regény végig olvastatja magát, nem laposodik el, nem ül le. Ám a harcokat bemutató fejezetek sem merülnek ki puszta csataleírásokban, ezek is jól átgondoltan vannak megszerkesztve, érdekes szituációkat, karaktereket vagy ellenfeleket mutatnak be.

A Vének háborúja olyan regény, amit nagyon sokféle közönségnek jó szívvel lehet ajánlani. Akik szeretik a military sci-fit, azoknak ez kötelező olvasmány. Akik nem nagyon olvastak még ilyet, de szerették például a Battlestar Galactica sorozatot, vagy épp bírták a Csillagkapu katonai miliőjét, azok is bátran szerencsét próbálhatnak vele. De bátran a kezébe lehet adni olyanoknak is, akik sosem olvastak sci-fit, de szeretik a militáns tematikát – emlékezetes találkozás lesz ez számukra is, és könnyen megszerettetheti velük a sci-fit.

    Elolvastam, bár ne tettem volna. Szerintem egyenesen pocsék. A totál unalom és a gyerekes írói megoldások jellemzik a könyvet. Nem volt drága de így is sajnálom, hogy erre pénzt adtam. Sehol nem olvastam, hogy bármi köze lenne a csillagközi invázióhoz de olvasás közben totál az jött le, hogy ez az megspékelve ezzel a 75 évesből katonával. Szóval aki szereti a kicsit értelmesebb és komolyabb scifiket – gondolok itt mondjuk egy Hyperionra – az nagy ívben kerülje el.

    Szerintem állati jó lett. Nem egy agyonpörgetett akcióregény, de megvan a maga tempója. Az író stílusa élvezetes, a karakterek bár felületesen ismerjük meg őket elég érzékletesek. Nagyszerűen elegyedik benne a humor a drámával és nem megy bele fölösleges moralizálgatásba, ami valóban a regény halála lehetne. Én olvasom is tovább a többi részt angolul.
